The Mardale Inn has been chosen as one of 50 Great Pubs
in England and Wales by Alastair Sawday
"Alastair Sawday picks the pubs with the warmest
welcome, best ales and finest food."
Country roads lead from the A6 to the Mardale Inn @ St Patrick's Well, a cosy Lake District inn dating from the early 18th century and recently refurbished by the new owners. The Inn is tucked away in the pleasant little village of Bampton in the Lowther Valley. This area, known as the Eastern Fells, is one of the most rural parts of the Lake District National Park and as such it was used as the location for the 80's cult classic film 'Withnail & I'. For Coast to Coasters, the situation saves the 3-mile uphill struggle to Shap, thus shortening the hardest day on the walk. Located near to Haweswater, it makes an excellent base for viewing the golden eagles, plus walking, biking, fishing and other outdoor activities. Dogs are very welcome at the Inn (please ensure
children are kept on a tight leash!). We are the closest accommodation in Bampton to Wainwright's Coast to Coast route (transfer available).
